Known as Tullie House since the end of the 17th century and once housed the city's main library. In 1990 the museum was modernised and expanded to become interactive, with a further Millennium development in 2001, including the Carlisle Millennium Gallery, which created a special walkway from Carlisle Castle.
Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery was the "Large Visitor Attraction of the Year 2007" winner for both Cumbria Tourism and England's Northwest Tourism Awards. It is also a Silver winner in the Enjoy England for Excellence Awards 2008.
Tullie House houses collections of national importance in one impressive museum and gallery. Its ever changing, imaginative exhibition and events programme ensures there is always something for everyone. Set in beautiful gardens, Old Tullie House is a 17thC townhouse with a fine classical facade. Inside there are some original architectural features including a Jacobean staircase. The Panelled Room showcases key paintings from the Pre-Raphaelite period.
