Planning ahead

Plan your day.  Make sure that everyone in your group knows the route you are taking.  Calculate roughly how long your excursion will take and ensure you've given yourself enough time to get back before dark.  No matter how silly it seems always tell someone where you are going.

Walking clothing & equipment

Sunny and calm in the valleys can still mean cold and windy on the tops.  Four items can make a massive difference to your day - boots, base layer, waterproofs and rucksack.  Essentials for a day on the fells include hat and gloves, a spare warm layer, enough food and drink, and a first aid kit. A compass, map and the knowledge to use them will stop you getting lost.

On the water

If you are taking part in any type of water activity ensure you are wearing the correct clothing and buoyancy aids.  Activity providers will have equipment that you are able to use.  If you are going to indulge in a water-edge paddle take care.  What seems like a short way out can be dangerously deep and cold.  Many lakes drop dramatically in shelves without warning.
