modern day plant hunters...
Cumbria is almost swamped with horticultural treasures, but where did these plants come from? The history of the people who introduced plants to the county makes interesting reading - they searched throughout the world for rare and unusual species to place in the gardens of England.
Today we can go in search of these plants - both native and non- native species are all in one county - Cumbria - basked in the warm wet blanket of the Gulf Stream. We can place them in our own gardens, watch them grow, develop - harvest flowers and crops. Before long we can take cuttings, collect seeds and share our plants with our friends. In our own way we can become modern plant hunters.
Cumbria, with some of the oldest mountains in the world, is a county where we are able to enjoy the thrill of the hunt without the hardships experienced by those men who risked their lives to bring new species into our lives. In Cumbria we have the world in our gardens.
